8 days / 7 nights - Approx. 225 km cycling
The North Sea is an iconic sea between Denmark and England, and it will be your constant companion on this journey. Along the way, you’ll experience the lush inland countryside, the spectacular birdlife at Ringkøbing Fjord, the rugged coastline with its endless dunes, the vibrant city of Esbjerg, and the charming island of Fanø just a short ferry ride away in the Wadden Sea – the world’s most important wetland.
Look forward to cycling along National Cycling Route 1, exploring the surf culture at the fjord, visiting the beautiful market town of Ringkøbing, discovering the Filsø nature reserve, stepping into the Viking Age at Bork Havn, enjoying the buzz of Esbjerg, relaxing on Fanø, crossing the Skjern River on cable ferries – and, overall, to a truly unique journey through a diverse and fascinating landscape.
The tour begins and ends in the old market town of Varde, known for its cozy atmosphere and centuries-old history. There are excellent train connections to Copenhagen Airport, Hamburg Airport, and the rest of Europe. If you arrive by car, you can also look forward to a beautiful drive through varied scenery.

Day 1
Arrival in Varde
If you need to stretch your legs after your trip, Varde’s winding streets offer plenty to see. You can also visit Arnbjerg Park and Varde Miniby, or, if you prefer cultural experiences, the Frello Museum and Varde Garten are excellent options.
Day 2
Varde – Skjern (approx. 60 km)
Leaving Varde, the route heads north through flat landscapes along Cycle Route 10. Several historic churches make for interesting stops along the way before you arrive at Bork Viking Harbour, where you can step back into the Viking Age in an authentic setting. Later, why not pause for coffee or lunch in Bork Havn while taking in the local surf scene at Ringkøbing Fjord?
From here, the route continues past Skaven Strand and on to Skjern Enge, the delta of Denmark’s longest river. You’ll cross the river by hand-pulled cable ferries before reaching your hotel in Skjern.
Day 3
Skjern – Ringkøbing (approx. 30 km)
A short cycling day, as there is plenty to see along the way. Not far from Skjern lies the village of Stauning, home to the award-winning Stauning Whisky distillery and the Danish Aircraft Museum at Stauning Airfield. Later, the route brings you close to the fjord before reaching another historic market town: Ringkøbing. Here, you can enjoy the harbour, visit the museum telling the story of Denmark’s West Coast, or unwind at the spa in Hotel Fjordgaarden.
Day 4
Ringkøbing – Nymindegab (approx. 50 km)
The day begins literally at the water’s edge, following Denmark’s oldest cycle path around the northern part of Ringkøbing Fjord. Watch the kite surfers at Kloster Surfspot before rolling out across Bagges Damn – “Denmark’s longest boardwalk.”
Now you’re on Holmsland Klit and National Cycle Route 1. A key landmark is Lyngvig Lighthouse, which you’ll pass on the way to Hvide Sande – the perfect lunch stop. Enjoy the lively harbour atmosphere and the unique setting between fjord and sea, with its large sluices, fishing boats, and shipyard.
The route continues through a dramatic dune landscape – and why not take a dip in the North Sea?
At the southern tip of the fjord lies Nymindegab, a former fishing village and today’s destination.
Bonus: If you have the energy, consider a side trip to Værnengene, one of Europe’s most important breeding grounds for waders and a key resting site for migratory birds.
Day 5
Nymindegab – Esbjerg (approx. 60 km)
Continue south along National Cycle Route 1 through Blåbjerg Klit Plantation, established 150 years ago to prevent sand drift. The next highlight is Filsø, one of Denmark’s largest lakes, rich in flora and fauna.
At Vejers Strand, it’s time to leave the North Sea briefly – perhaps after lunch – and head inland towards Oksbøl.
A visit to FLUGT – The Refugee Museum of Denmark offers a thought-provoking insight into the many refugees who came here after World War II, turning the area into one of Denmark’s largest temporary settlements.
The route continues through open landscapes with fine views over Ho Bay, before returning to the water and following the coast south to Esbjerg – a modern city with around 70,000 inhabitants, where you’ll stay for two nights.
Day 6
Excursion to Fanø
You may choose to spend the day in Esbjerg, enjoying the city’s atmosphere and perhaps visiting the Fisheries and Maritime Museum. Alternatively, take the short 12-minute ferry ride to Fanø, a charming and vibrant island.
Fanø is known for its strong maritime traditions, folk music, and distinctive landscapes. You can easily cycle around much of the island in a day – and don’t forget your swimwear, as Fanø’s long sandy beach is perfect for a seaside break.
Day 7
Esbjerg – Varde (approx. 25 km)
Today’s stage is short, giving you extra time in Esbjerg if you didn’t see everything yesterday. Esbjerg is a young city, only about 150 years old, and it’s fascinating to see how it has grown up around its harbour.
Leaving the city to the north, you soon return to open landscapes dotted with plantations. These were established both for timber and to combat the drifting sands that once plagued the region.
Back in Varde, you’ll find yourself on familiar streets. If you didn’t have time for a city stroll at the beginning of your trip, now’s your chance.
Day 8
Departure
After an eventful cycling holiday through Denmark’s distinctive West Jutland landscapes, it’s time for your journey home.
