This is Denmark!

You would be hard pressed to find a better introduction to Denmark as a cycling country – and when it comes from the presenters on Global Cycling Network, there must be something to it. See the video below.

Global Cycling Network has been Exploring Denmark – now you can ride the same tour and even more!

The routes are a mix of asphalt and gravel and are designed for gravel bikes – and of course they can also be ridden on touring bikes. There are also route options that run exclusively on asphalt, so the tour can also be done on a road bike.

Daily stages range from 40 to 105 kilometres – and each day there are at least two different route options for asphalt/gravel and one that runs exclusively on asphalt.

Along the way you will experience the fjord landscape around Vejle and the Bindeballe Trail through the river valley and into the hinterland, the flatter landscapes heading down towards Esbjerg, the view over Ho Bay, Denmark’s westernmost point at Blåvandshuk, the beach along the North Sea, the restored Lake Filsø, Tipperne in Ringkøbing Fjord and Holmsland Dune that separates the fjord from the sea, the heathland areas towards Herning, Denmark’s Outdoor Capital Silkeborg and the Lake Highlands, Himmelbjerget – The Sky Mountain, the Ancient Road (Hærvejen), and Jelling, where the Vikings founded the Danish kingdom.

Depending on which daily routes you choose, the total tour is between 410 and 460 kilometres – with the addition of the option of an extra loop in the Silkeborg area, where there are two overnight stays.

If you choose routes exclusively on asphalt, the tour will be 420 kilometres.

And as Si and Ollie note several times in the video, in addition to superb cycling there are also plenty of great food experiences and bakery stops to look forward to!

Day 1

Arrival in Vejle
Get your bike ready – whether it’s your own or one of our high-quality rental bikes. You may feel like going for a warm-up ride: Munkebjerg Hill just outside Vejle is legendary and is one of the few climbs in Denmark with a hairpin bend, and Kiddesvej is a regular feature whenever there are bike races in Vejle.

Day 2

Vejle – Esbjerg (approx. 95 km)

The day starts with a truly beautiful ride on the Bindeballe Trail through the Vejle River Valley. Here you ride on a disused railway that has now been converted into a cycle path, and along the way you pass, among other things, the remains of the Ravning Bridge, which was built under King Harald Bluetooth more than 1,000 years ago.

Bindeballe Merchant’s Yard is located at the end of the trail and is an obvious coffee stop.

You now climb out of the river valley and reach the flatter stretches on the road further west. The landscape is varied, shifting between open farmland and forest areas.

Finally, you approach Esbjerg, one of Denmark’s larger – and youngest – cities, and an important port and fishing harbour.

Day 3

Esbjerg – Nymindegab (approx. 90 km)

From the city you continue north along the coast towards the flat beach areas at Ho Bay. The first destination is the small town of Oksbøl, where FLUGT – Refugee Museum of Denmark is well worth a visit.

Continue around the bay, where the next museum also tells a story of conflict: the Tirpitz bunker at Blåvand.

At Blåvandshuk Lighthouse you reach Denmark’s westernmost point – and from here you head north along the North Sea coast. From Vejers you can cycle on the wide beach beneath the steep dunes, and a little later another natural experience awaits: Lake Filsø – a large restored lake that has become a very important bird habitat.

The day ends in Nymindegab, right on the edge of the North Sea.

Day 4

Nymindegab – Ringkøbing (approx. 70 km)

Today you can choose to continue directly along the coast for a shorter ride – or visit Tipperne, which with its flat salt meadows is a very interesting bird nesting area.

The coastal route follows National Cycle Route No. 1 and is a truly beautiful ride through the dune landscape. Hvide Sande is an obvious place to stop for lunch – perhaps at the fish smokery, where you can enjoy all kinds of seafood.

Continuing north, you pass Lyngvig Lighthouse before reaching Søndervig – a holiday town that makes for a good coffee stop.

Now the route turns east towards the old market town of Ringkøbing. You can take a short detour along Bagges Dam with superb views over Ringkøbing Fjord.

Day 5

Ringkøbing – Silkeborg (approx. 105 km)

From flat coastal landscapes to more undulating forest terrain.

You leave Ringkøbing along the fjord and soon turn east towards the centre of Jutland. An interesting area is the Haunstrup Coal Beds, where lignite was mined during the Second World War – and where there is now a really good mountain bike trail.

The city of Herning lies in the middle of the heathland and is ideal for a lunch stop. From here you continue towards the large heath plantations until you reach “The Crooked Line”: a former railway that has now become a nature trail. The closer you get to Silkeborg, the more impressive the original railway construction becomes.

Silkeborg is Denmark’s Outdoor Capital, and here you will stay for two nights, giving you plenty of time to explore the area.

Day 6
There are many options today: you can relax and enjoy the town and visit one of the coffee bars, you can go to a museum and meet the Tollund Man – the world’s most famous bog body, you can take a boat trip on the Silkeborg Lakes, or you can cycle some exciting routes in the area, for example along the Gudenå River, Denmark’s longest river.

You can also rent a mountain bike and try some of the trails – which are of a very high standard.

Day 7

Silkeborg – Vejle (approx. 90 km)

The ride out through the large forests is a great start to the day. The route is peaceful and varied – and the first goal is Himmelbjerget – The Sky Mountain. From the top there is a fantastic view over the Silkeborg Lakes and the forest – and in flat Denmark, a hill of 147 metres is quite a highlight.

Continue along another disused railway, and then you are on the Ancient Road (Hærvejen) – the old main route through Jutland, where people have walked and travelled for thousands of years. The road is a watershed, and you follow the ridge south towards Jelling, where the Vikings founded the Danish kingdom.

Remember to visit the great Jelling rune stone – and read how King Harold Bluetooth, who lived more than 1,000 years ago, gave his name to a modern technology.

The tour ends as it began: the Bindeballe Trail takes you into the centre of Vejle, and you have now truly been exploring Denmark.

Day 8

Departure – unless you choose to extend the trip and experience even more of Denmark.
