Visit the Vikings - Fiords, Culture, and History
8 days / 7 nights - Approx. 213 kms cycling
Deep fjords, rolling landscapes, charming coastal towns, and a journey through Viking territory await you on this tour.
You'll experience both the island of Fyn and the Jutland Peninsula. The old Little Belt Bridge from 1935 connects these regions – be sure to look out for the small porpoise as you cross!
You'll stay in fascinating coastal towns, a seaside town, and right in the middle of Viking land. The Vikings sailed on Vejle River a thousand years ago to reach Jelling – Denmark’s ancient royal seat, which is one of the main attractions of this tour.
The tour starts and ends in Middelfart on the west coast of Funen. There are excellent train connections to both Copenhagen Airport, Hamburg Airport, and the rest of Europe. If you arrive by car, Middelfart is conveniently located right by the motorway.

Day 1
Arrival in Middelfart. If you arrive early, consider visiting the Clay Ceramics Museum, beautifully situated by the Little Belt. Another option is bridge-walking on the old Little Belt Bridge – a unique experience.
Day 2
Middelfart – Vejle (approx. 50 kms)
If you didn’t visit the Little Belt Bridge yesterday, you’ll definitely do it today, as you cross the bridge heading towards Jutland. The first stop is Fredericia, where the historic fortifications with beautiful paths and viewpoints is well worth a visit.
The route continues along National Cycle Route No. 5 towards Vejle, where you’ll encounter the more undulating terrain as you approach the picturesque Vejle Fjord.
Vejle means "ford" and refers to the crossing between the fjord and the river that people have used for hundreds of years – and the name later became the name of the exciting town, which is today’s destination.
Day 3
Vejle – Horsens (approx. 38 kms)
The northern side of Vejle Fjord offers both beautiful views and lovely nature. You also pass "Bølgen" – iconic architecture that connects the city with the fjord. Mayby bring your swimwear and take a dip at Tirsbæk Beach just outside of Vejle.
After Vejle Fjord, the journey heads north along regional route 53. You'll pass through more small villages, where the local grocery store is a good opportunity to stock up on supplies. Just before Horsens Fjord, you'll pass by Boller Castle, with a history dating back to 1350. From here, you follow the Boller Trail into Horsens, an interesting city with a long industrial history – beautifully situated at the end of Horsens Fjord.
Day 4
Horsens (optional excursion approx. 52 kms)
Enjoy the day in the historic market town of Horsens, where you can visit "Fængslet" – Europe's largest prison museum – and the Industrial Museum, which tells the story of the city's industrial history.
If you prefer a day of cycling, a trip around Horsens Fjord is a great option. If you ride south of the fjord, you'll reach the small, charming town of Snaptun. From here, you can take the bike ferry via Hjarnø to Alrø and return north of the fjord back to Horsens.
During the ferry ride, you might consider taking a short stop on Hjarnø.
Day 5
Horsens – Vingsted (approx. 50 kms)
Today you truly enter Viking land. Denmark’s ancient royal city, Jelling, lies along the route, and it’s worth setting aside plenty of time here.
The large Jelling Stone is called "Denmark’s baptismal certificate." Over a thousand years ago, Harald Bluetooth inscribed here that he united Denmark into a kingdom – and made the Danes Christians. Denmark’s National Museum has a very exciting Viking exhibition in Jelling that you should definitely visit.
The past also marks today’s destination: right next to the hotel lies the Iron Age Village, which is also worth a visit.
Day 6
Vingsted – Kolding (approx. 45 kms)
The day starts with a ride along the Bindeballe trail – a former railway that is now a bike path leading through the impressive Vejle River Valley. Remember to stop at Ravning Station, which is now a museum. Here you can also see where the Ravning Bridge crossed the river a thousand years ago. A fantastic structure that still marks the landscape.
Bindeballe Købmandsgård is a truly cozy, old-fashioned merchant's yard, perfect for a refreshment.
You now climb up the Vejle River Valley and encounter the Egtved Girl’s Grave. This grave is one of Europe’s finest Bronze Age finds – more exciting history to explore.
The day ends in Kolding – the tour’s third major town at the end of a fjord.
Day 7
Kolding – Middelfart (approx. 30 kms)
A fascinating place to start the day is Koldinghus – a castle over 750 years old, which for centuries was one of the country’s most important royal castles. Today the building is spectacularly restored and part of the Royal Collection.
On the way to Middelfart, you visit Skærbæk, idyllically located by Kolding Fjord.
Later it’s time to cross the old Little Belt Bridge again, and immediately after, you turn into Hindsgavl Deer Park, where you can see herds of fallow and red deer before reaching the day’s destination.
Day 8
Departure after an eventful cycling holiday – unless you choose to extend your stay, perhaps with a few days in Odense or Copenhagen.
