Around the scenic Little Belt
8 days / 7 nights - Approx. 325 km cycling
The tour around the Little Belt is like experiencing Denmark in miniature: rolling landscapes, idyllic villages, tranquil forests, romantic fjords, small islands, and great cycling paths. Along the way, you’ll also get a taste of city life when you visit Kolding, Haderslev, Aabenraa, Sønderborg, and Assens.
The Little Belt is the lifeline of it all – a calm water full of experiences, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a porpoise. A visit to Christiansfeld, known for its honey cakes and unique lifestyle, is also a big highlight.
Along the way, you’ll visit several islands and take the ferry between Als and Fyn.
The tour starts and ends in Middelfart on the west coast of Fyn. There are excellent train connections to Copenhagen Airport, Hamburg Airport, and the rest of Europe. If you arrive by car, Middelfart is conveniently located right by the motorway.
The tour lasts 8 days / 7 nights and includes accommodation, luggage transport, digital routes, map, hotline service, and bike rental options.

Day 1
Arrival in Middelfart. You can take a walk along the harbor, visit the Clay Museum of Ceramic Art, or maybe try bridge-walking on the Old Little Belt Bridge. There are also several local history museums worth a visit.
Day 2
Middelfart – Christiansfeld (approx. 54 km)
The Old Little Belt Bridge takes you from Fyn to Jutland after you’ve passed the deer in Hindsgavl Deer Park. If you have your swimwear with you, you can take a dip in the Little Belt at Skærbæk before reaching Kolding, where it’s a great idea to visit Koldinghus – a castle over 750 years old that was once one of the country’s most important royal palaces. The tour continues towards Christiansfeld – a unique town founded by the Moravian Church in 1772 and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
Day 3
Christiansfeld – Aabenraa (approx. 47 km)
Be sure to taste Christiansfeld’s specialty before leaving the town: the honey cake, which is a tradition dating back to 1783. With a mouthful of good taste, you continue along National Cycle Route 8 towards Haderslev, where the impressive cathedral on the highest point in town is especially worth a visit. You can also take a trip on the excursion boat on Haders-
lev Dam and stroll through the charming streets of the town
center. The tour continues towards Aabenraa, known for its large, lively harbor. The town lies beautifully at the bottom of the Aabenraa Fjord and has a history that dates back to the 12th century. The many picturesque houses and buildings in the town center testify to its past as an important trading and seafaring town.
Day 4
Aabenraa – Sønderborg (approx. 51 km)
You continue the tour in the borderlands between Denmark and Germany – it’s clear from the building styles and the language that there has historically been significant influence from both countries here. If you’re interested in art, a visit to the Brundlund Castle Art Museum is recommended before continuing along National Cycle Route 8 towards Flensburg Fjord, where it’s perfect for a swim on a warm day. Here, the route turns east, and soon you’ll reach Gråsten, where it’s recommended to take a small detour from the route to visit the beautiful garden at the royal Gråsten Castle. Just before arriving in Sønderborg, you pass Dybbøl Mill and the exciting history center that tells the story of the war in 1864. Sønderborg is located on the island of Als, and you arrive via King Christian X’s Bridge over the Alssund.
Day 5
Sønderborg (excursion option, approx. 58 km)
Sønderborg is an exciting, historic town. Sønderborg Castle was founded over 850 years ago, and today you can visit the castle and travel back in time through both Danish and regional history. Alternatively, you can go on an excursion today: after a pleasant bike ride along National Cycle Route 5, you take the ferry back to Als, where you can visit Universe Science Park near Nordborg before the tour continues back via Augustenborg to Sønderborg.
Day 6
Sønderborg – Assens (approx. 57 km)
Today’s stage first takes you towards Augustenborg, where you can visit the castle park, which was once frequented by the fairy-tale poet Hans Christian Andersen. From the port town of Fynshav, you take the ferry to Bøjden on Fyn. Look forward to a beautiful ferry ride.
Once on Fyn, the tour continues north through the outskirts of the Svanninge Hills, also known as the “Alps of Fyn”. You can make a detour to the small, charming port town of Falsled before cycling around Helnæs Bay to today’s
scenic destination south of Assens, where you can also take an extra trip out over the Helnæs Causeway and
enjoy the view of the Little Belt from the eastern side.
Day 7
Assens – Middelfart (approx. 58 km)
National Cycle Route 8 takes you to the first stop of today’s stage: Assens. Stroll through the charming streets, perhaps taste a slice of the brunsviger, a Fyn pastry specialty, or experience life in the small harbor. A fun visit is “Ernst” – an exhibition of a local silverware manufacturer’s large antique collection, which also includes a visit to the beautiful garden inspired by Italy. Later you continue through scenic landscapes along the Little Belt, where there are several swimming opportunities along the way, e.g. Føns Strand. The day ends in Middelfart, and you have now completed the entire tour around the Little Belt, experiencing all that this exciting area has to offer.
Day 8
Departure day after a richly experienced cycling holiday – unless you choose to extend your stay, perhaps with a few days in Odense or Copenhagen.
