Tour of Fyn - Small Danish Hotels

8 days / 7 nights - Approx. 185 kms cycling

Fyn is a fairytale. The best way of experiencing the fairytale is by spending the nights in the small cozy inns and hotels that are members of the "Small Danish Hotels" hotel chain.

The tour starts and ends in Odense. From here you cycle down to South Fyn and can look forward to spending the night in Brobyværk (the name itself sounds adventurous!) and in Troense, where you literally live on the harbor.

One of the things the small old inns and hotels are really capable of is to take care of the Danish food tradition - so another part of the adventure is to sit down at the restaurant when you arrive after a great bike day, ordering yourself a nice meal.

Day 1

Arrive on your own to Odense and prepare for a relaxing and exiting tour. If you have booked a rental bike you will find it at the hotel. Tonight you stay in Odense.

Day 2

Odense – Broby (approx. 25 kms)

Odense is the capital of Fyn – and also well known as the birthplace of author Hans Christian Andersen. It is worth to have a stroll around the city. From urban environment out into rural landscape on minor roads, starting to experience the idyllic scenery of Denmark’s garden. Today you end up in Broby – a charming and idyllic village in the middle of Fyn.

Day 3

Broby – excursion day

You have more options for excursions today. The old harbour town of Faaborg is one of these. Arriving Faaborg on your bike you will be overlooking the archipelago of Southfyn, where you might spot a local ferry or the sail of an old wooden ship. Faaborg itself offers small streets to stroll and old houses to create a very specific atmosphere.

Other possibilities are visits to some of the local farm shops and manor houses – experience some of the products that make Fyn deserve its reputation as the garden of Denmark. Return to the same hotel for another night.

Day 4

Broby – Svendborg (approx. 50 kms)

Two different and charming types of landscape awaits you today: the agricultural area of Midfyn and the naval shores of Southern Fyn. Winding its way through the fields and heading for the open water the route takes you through villages and rural countryside. Later you will see the archipelago of Southern Fyn where numerous spots offer beautiful views over the water and to some of the smaller islands.

Remember your swimwear – today the salt water might be a nice refreshment.

Your destination of the day is Svendborg – an old naval town with a modern ambience.

Day 5

Svendborg

Svendborg is the maritime centre of Fyn. Just next to the quay of the ferry from Ærø is “Træskibsbroen” (the wooden ships bridge), where you can be lucky to see a very fine collection of old wooden ships. The city itself offers shopping, attractions, restaurants – and of course a variety of bars, as it is still a lively seaman’s town.

Another option is to take the ferry to the beautiful island of Ærø (Aeroe). You will experience the archipelago from the first row and you will be visiting the fascinating town of Ærøskøbing (Aeroeskoebing). Old houses and cobble stoned streets awaits you – along with an interesting history. Remember your camera – you are in fairytale country!

Return to the hotel in Svendborg for another night.

Day 6

Svendborg – Odense (approx. 60 kms)

From the second largest city of Fyn return to the largest – and actually from the one harbour city to the other. The harbour of Odense lies outside the city itself, but shipbuilding and seamanship has been important issues for Odense up through the ages.

On the route you passes the beautiful castle Egeskov, hosting a fine collection of old cars and aeroplanes, and well worth a visit.

You can also decide to take the train from Svendborg to Odense – a nice and easy 40-50 mins. train ride.

You stay in Odense tonight.

Day 7

Odense – Kerteminde – Odense (approx.50 kms)

Today we suggest an excursion to the town Kerteminde – situated on the shore of the Great Belt, which divides Fyn and Zealand.

In Kerteminde a good choice could be to visit the Fjord & Bælt-center (“Fiord and Belt Centre”) – or maybe have an ice cream at the harbour – before you head back for Odense, enjoying even more beautiful scenery, timbered houses and lovely gardens on the way.

Return to the hotel in Odense for another night.

Day 8

Time to travel home – or maybe to extend your holiday with a day or two extra in Odense – or maybe in Copenhagen.
